Bets retreats from legal action against blocking Bolsa Família beneficiaries

The sports betting sector decided to withdraw from its intention to judicialize the decision of the Ministry of Finance which prevents beneficiaries of social programs, such as Bolsa Família, from placing bets. The measure had generated an immediate reaction among operators, who even prepared technical notes to question the blockade in court, reveals the Coluna do Guilherme Amado in the PlatôBR.

THE ban was established by the Ministry of Finance in Septemberthrough an ordinance that determines the automatic blocking of beneficiaries of social programs, such as Bolsa Família, on online betting platforms.

According to the government, the measure aims to prevent resources destined for social assistance from being used in gambling and reinforce control over the origin of the amounts invested in bets. Operators are required to cross-check data with the Single Registry (CadÚnico) and restrict access to those who receive social benefits.

Government Starts Blocking Bolsa Família Cards for Bets

The movement, however, lost strength after the fall of the Provisional Measure that dealt with the taxation of bets and replaced the old IOF on financial operations. With the MP off the agenda, the clash was “mitigated”, according to industry sources. Behind the scenes, the assessment is that taking the issue to court now would represent a high cost and risk of institutional wear and tear.

Despite the momentary retreat, tension between the government and the betting sector remains. The Ministry of Finance does not rule out proposing new specific tax measures for betting platforms in the coming months.
