The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddadstated this Tuesday (28) that some members of the Liberal Party (PL), party of former president Jair Bolsonaro, support the government in taxing online sports betting, known as bets. According to the minister, “the good part of the PL” has been favorable to the federal government’s intention to increase taxation on the sector.
“There is a part of the PL that cannot even be discussed, but the good part of the PL negotiates the correction of tax injustice, for example. There is a part of the PL that is against bets paying little tax, there is a large part of the PL that is with the government on this issue of bets”, said the minister at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance, in Brasília.
The minister stated that the party should not be held responsible for the Bolsonaro government’s decision to maintain the betting exemption for four years. “It is not true that the entire PL is in favor of what the previous government did in maintaining the exemption from betting for four years. A large part of the PL even rebelled against the Bolsonaro government due to the privileged treatment that not even a hospital has”, he assessed.
Haddad also highlighted that PL members have supported the government on other issues aimed at correcting tax inequalities.
After the expiration of the Provisional Measure (MP) that dealt with the increase in the Tax on Financial Operations (IOF), the government decided to resend the proposals through bills. Among them is the text that deals with the taxation of bets, an issue that must still face resistance among some parliamentarians in Congress.
