Research shows that 40 million Brazilians placed bets on bets last year

One lifting points out that around 40 million Brazilians placed at least one bet or played online at bets in the last 12 months. The research was conducted by the National Confederation of Retail Managers (CNDL) and the Credit Protection Service (SPC Brasil), in partnership with Offerwise Pesquisas.

According to the data, published in advance on the blog of journalist Miriam Leitão, from the newspaper The Globesports betting is the most popular, with around 54% of bettors, mainly among men. Among online casino games, slots represent 28%, while roulette and slot machines account for 22% and 20%, respectively.

The survey also asked respondents the reasons that led them to bet at bookmakers.

Reasons that led consumers to bet:

  • Curiosity: 35% said they started betting out of curiosity;
  • Make money: 22% said they started with the desire to make money quickly and easily;
  • Fun: 22% declared they bet in search of adrenaline or fun.

Expenses and financial impact

Regarding frequency, 24% of bettors said they gamble weekly, 18% two to three times a week and 11% said they place bets every day.

The survey also shows that 19% of bettors committed their income to betting, while 41% gave up other expenses to continue playing — especially eating out (15%), internet (12%), supermarket (12%) and family leisure (10%).

Furthermore, 17% stopped paying a bill to bet, and 29% have already had their name negative because of debts linked to online gambling. Of these, 17% remain in this situation.

Risk of debt and seeking help

The survey also shows that 28% of bettors have already sought or considered seeking money to bet, whether through loans (17%), salary advances (8%) or even through the sale of their own or family’s assets without consent (7%).

Another worrying fact is that 37% tried to reduce or stop betting, but were unable to do so. Only 21% sought help, mainly in churches, with family and friends, or with health professionals, such as doctors and psychologists.
