The Ministry of Defense wants a slice of the tax revenue paid by bookmakers to invest in military sport. The department prepared a draft bill to change the distribution of revenue, but is having difficulty obtaining political support to move the proposal forward.
The idea has already been presented by the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, to the Minister of Sport, André Fufuca, who signaled that he would not oppose the redivision.
Of the 12% charged on net revenue from bets, 36% is allocated to sports areas, such as the ministry, state sports departments and even the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB).
Under current legislation, the National Military Sports Subsystem is not covered by the division. The Defense proposal is to remove 1% of the 22.2% that belongs to the Ministry of Sports.

The percentage would represent around R$50 million extra in the budget of the Brazilian Military Sports Commission, of the Ministry of Defense.
The topic was included in the discussion of the Provisional Measure that dealt with changes in taxation and intended to increase the tax on bets from 12% to 18%. However, the text lost its validity after the Chamber removed it from the agenda and imposed a defeat on the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
The financing of military sport should be one of the topics under debate at the next meeting of the Chamber’s Sports Committee, on Wednesday, 26.
