THE Ministry of Sports (MEsp) represented Brazil at the 11th Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, held this Monday (15) in Doha, Qatar. The event highlighted the Brazilian government’s initiatives to combat the manipulation of sporting results and was attended by the general coordinator of Economic Development of Sport, Danilo Mendonça.
Organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the panel “Game On: United against Corruption in Sport” brought together experts from different countries to discuss prevention, investigation and accountability strategies in cases of sports fraud.
According to Mendonça, the invitation to Brazil demonstrates the international recognition of the work carried out by the Ministry of Sports in protecting the integrity of competitions. “The invitation for the Brazilian government to share its experience indicates recognition of the work carried out by the Ministry of Sports in protecting national sport”, he stated.
The representative recalled that sports betting was legalized in Brazil in 2018, but only began to be regulated in 2024, with a focus on preventing illicit activities, combating manipulation and cooperation between public bodies. Since then, the government has adopted an inter-ministerial strategy, involving the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice and the security forces.
Among the ongoing actions are cooperation agreements with specialized international entities, the creation of a flow for receiving and investigating complaints and the development of technologies to monitor suspicious activities in the betting sector.
Mendonça highlighted that Brazil is working on formulating a National Policy to Combat Manipulation of Sports Results, in partnership with UNODC. The plan includes training athletes and professionals, combating the illegal betting market and disseminating responsible gambling practices.
