Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) announced that he will forward, by the end of February, to the Legislative Assembly, the bill that authorizes the operation of the new state lottery for the Rio Grande do Sul. The proposal will be sent urgently and provides for four types of betting, including fixed-odd sports betting, known as bets.
The announcement was made this Wednesday (4), during the governor’s arrival at the Assembly to participate in the inauguration of the new president of the House, deputy Sergio Peres (Republicans). According to Leite, the resumption of the state lottery is part of the economic and administrative agenda for 2026, with the aim of increasing revenue and strengthening public policies.
The inclusion of bets in the text, however, has generated resistance in different groups, including among parliamentarians from the government base. As determined by the newspaper O Sulthe device that deals with sports betting is seen behind the scenes as the “goat in the room” — a negotiation strategy to facilitate the approval of the other modalities foreseen in the project.
According to information released by columnist Rosane de Oliveira, from GZHthe proposal is part of the Leite government’s priorities for the beginning of the legislative year. The model under discussion foresees the concession of the operation to the private sector, with State regulation and supervision, following examples from other units of the Federation that have already reactivated their lotteries.
The project should be filed in the coming weeks and will be analyzed by committees before going to a vote in the plenary of the Legislative Assembly.
