The president of Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), stated this Thursday (5) that Congress needs to act cautiously before moving forward with proposals that prohibit the advertising of sports betting in Brazil. The statement was given after the project that vetoes the sector’s advertising advanced in a committee of the Senate.
In an interview with Power360Motta said that there is still no consensus among party leaders in the Chamber on a total ban on betting advertising and highlighted the need to consider the economic impacts of the measure, especially on the financing of sport and events.

According to the President of the Chamber, an absolute veto on advertising could have relevant side effects, particularly in Brazilian football, which is heavily dependent on sponsorship from betting companies. He suggested the focus could be on improving regulation and combating illegal platforms, rather than an outright ban.
Motta’s position comes at a time when Congress is debating different projects on the topic. In the Senate, the Science and Technology Committee approved a text that prohibits advertising, sponsorship and promotion of sports betting and online games, and the proposal is now being analyzed by the Constitution and Justice Committee.
