Federal Revenue collects R$1.5 billion from betting in January

THE Federal Revenue of Brazil (RFB) released this Tuesday (24) the balance of federal revenue collection for January this year. The federal government raised R$1.5 billion from taxation of the sports betting and online gaming sector in the first month of 2026. The information was presented in press conference held at the Ministry of Finance, in Brasília.

The growth in federal revenue compared to January last year was 2,642%, rising from R$50 million to R$1.496 billion. The significant increase compared to the same month in 2025 is due to the beginning of the process of migrating the regulation of the betting market in Brazil, on January 1, 2025.

The data was detailed by the head of the Center for Tax and Customs Studies, Claudemir Malaquias, and by the coordinator of Forecasting and Analysis of the Federal Revenue, Marcelo Gomide, during transmission on the official channel of the Ministry of Finance.

The January collection does not yet reflect the increase in the tax rate on the sector, approved at the end of 2025, due to the nineteen period provided for by law. According to the approved text, the rate will increase from 12% to 13% in 2026, rise to 14% in 2027 and reach 15% in 2028.

The Ministry of Finance’s expectation is that government revenue will increase by around R$850 million in 2026, with an increase of one percentage point in the GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue) rate.

In total, in January this year, federal government revenue from taxes, contributions and other revenues totaled R$325.8 billion. The value represents a real increase of 3.56% over the same month in 2025. This was also the highest collection ever recorded in every month since the beginning of the Federal Revenue historical series, in 1995.
