Illegal market still represents a large portion of bets
The case occurs amid discussions about combating the illegal betting market in Brazil.
A study titled “Off the Radar: Size and socioeconomic impacts of the illegal betting market in Brazil”prepared by LCA Consultoresin partnership with the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) and the Locomotive Institutepoints out that between 41% and 51% of bets placed in the country occur on unregulated platforms.
According to the survey, only in second quarter of last yearthe performance of these platforms generated a estimated tax loss between R$1.8 billion and R$2.7 billion. Over a 12-month period, the potential loss could reach R$ 10.8 billion in revenue that no longer enters the public coffers.
As these companies operate outside the regulated system — without paying taxes and without government supervision — it is not possible to accurately determine the total volume moved or the exact economic impact.
Currently, operators graduates by the federal government can be identified by the domain “.bet.br”adopted by platforms authorized to offer fixed odds bets in the national territory.
