Women represent 16.9% of iGaming in Spain, says official report

Female participation in the online gaming market in Spain continues to grow strongly and represents 16.9% of active playersaccording to a report released by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), body linked to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030.

The study, based on official data from licensed operators for 2024, reveals not only the advancement of female presence in iGaming, but also relevant changes in behavior, consumption and profile of female players in the country.

Accelerated growth and young profile

In 2024, Spain recorded 1,991,550 active online playersbeing 335,627 women. The number confirms a continuous growth trend in recent years, with recent acceleration.

The report highlights a strong generational profile:

  • 59.4% of players are under 35 years old
  • The range with the highest concentration is between 26 and 35 years old
  • The youngest group grew the most, with increase of more than 30% compared to 2023

The data indicate that female growth in Spanish iGaming is directly linked to a new generation of digital users.

Betting and casino lead preference

Among the gaming segments, women mainly concentrate their activity on:

  • Sports betting
  • Online casino games

These two segments have a broad advantage over bingo and poker.

The study also highlights an important generational difference:

  • Younger players tend to prefer sports betting
  • Older age groups are more inclined towards casinos

Women handled €608 million in deposits

In 2024, players deposited €608 millionrepresenting 13.32% of the total movement in the market.

In the last five years, growth has been significant:

  • Female deposits grew 117%
  • Growth higher than the general average (101%)

Despite this, the average value per user is still lower:

  • €2,019 per woman
  • €2,482 overall average

Behavior patterns and schedules

Behavioral analysis shows specific patterns among female players:

  • The largest volume of deposits occurs in beginning of the month (day 1)
  • There is a progressive decrease over the days
  • Small peaks occur on days 10 and 24

In the daily clipping:

  • Activity is more balanced during the week (different from the general public, which concentrates on weekends)

Regarding behavior by time:

  • Low activity between 0h and 5h
  • Growth throughout the day
  • Peak at 8pmaligned with sporting events
  • Second peak between 9pm and 11pm

Average annual spending reaches €539, but concentration is uneven

The study points out a strong asymmetry in the financial behavior of female players:

  • Average annual loss: €539
  • Median: between €10 and €30

This indicates that a small portion of users concentrates a large part of the expenses.

Another relevant point:

  • Younger players present lower losses
  • In some cases, they even registered net earnings in previous years

Among the highest spending players:

  • Top reached €3,458 in losses in 2024
  • Still below the peak recorded in 2023

Women perform better in betting

In the comparison by gender within the betting segment:

  • Women present greater earnings than men in the top percentiles
  • AND smaller losses in lower percentiles

Example:

  • Female high gain: up to €1,519
  • Men: about €551

In the casino, behavior between men and women is practically equivalent, with high losses in both groups.

High incidence of female identity fraud

The report also contains a relevant safety warning:

Despite representing a minority in the market, women correspond to:

  • 46.1% of cases of identity supplantation

In total:

  • 8,675 identities affected
  • 4,003 belong to women

The data is part of the DGOJ’s official anti-fraud protocol, which monitors the misuse of data on betting platforms.

Structural growth trend in European iGaming

The analysis concludes that female participation in iGaming Spanish is not just a one-off growth, but rather a market structural change.

Among the main factors:

  • Entry of new digital generations
  • Greater access to online platforms
  • Expansion of the regulated market
  • Evolution of product and marketing strategies

The scenario observed in Spain reinforces a trend that is already beginning to be repeated in other regulated markets in Europe and Latin America: the increase in female presence as a relevant vector of growth in the online betting sector.
