Lula announces Novo Desenrola with blocking of bets for those who join the program

THE President Lula announced this Thursday (30) the launch of New Desenrola Brazila program aimed at renegotiating the debts of indebted workers and families. According to the PT member, the initiative will be officially presented next Monday (4).

According to Lula, anyone who joins the program will be prevented from accessing online betting platforms, known as bets, for a period of one year. The measure, according to the president, seeks to prevent beneficiaries from renegotiating debts and continuing to compromise their income with gambling.

During a speech on national radio and television on Labor Day, Lula stated that the government wants to protect the budget of Brazilian families and reduce the impact of debt. “What you cannot do is renegotiate the debt and continue losing money betting on bets”, he declared.

Lula had already positioned himself against the bets. In an interview with ICL Notícias, the PT member said that, if it were up to him, the betting platforms would be closed. “If betting causes the harm that we think it does, why don’t we put an end to betting?”, he asked.

Despite President Lula’s speech, in the 1st quarter of 2026, the government raised R$3.4 billion from taxation of the sports betting and online gaming sector in the country.

Novo Desenrola should allow the renegotiation of debts such as credit cards, special checks, personal credit and student financing. The government also informed that interest may be limited to 1.99% per month, with discounts between 30% and 90% on the amounts owed.

Another measure announced is the possibility of using up to 20% of the FGTS balance to pay off debts, within the rules that will be detailed in the official launch of the program.
