Government notifies Apple and Google about illegal betting apps

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) sent letters to Google and to Applelast Friday (17), requesting clarifications about the availability of illegal betting applications in the Google Play Store and App Store in Brazil.

The measure was taken after the government identified the presence of several apps that offer betting without regulatory authorization, based on monitoring by the General Coordination of Indicative Rating of the National Secretariat for Digital Rights (SEDIGI).

According to the folder, the applications would not even be disguised under other functionalities and could be easily found using simple search terms, such as “Tigrinho game”. Examples of the applications identified are included in the annexes sent to companies.

With the notification, companies must present detailed documentation about their distribution policies for these applications, in addition to informing the procedures used to verify regulatory authorizations and the age verification mechanisms adopted.

In addition to the measures, the MJSP also requested an updated list of all applications in the lottery, betting and casino categories available to users in Brazil.

In a note, Google informed that it guided developers on new requirements related to the indicative rating, highlighting that the evaluation displayed in the store is based on information provided by the application creators themselves. The company added that if inconsistencies or policy violations are identified, apps may be removed or suspended. Apple was contacted, but had not yet responded until the article was published.

The presence of illegal online betting applications on Google and Apple platforms had previously been reported. A report from Folha de S.Paulopublished at the beginning of the month, pointed out that unauthorized bets offer sports betting games, online casino and the popular “tigrinho” in Apple’s virtual store. According to the publication, meanwhile, platforms licensed by the federal government still do not have their own applications available on the App Store.
