Government prepares decree to restrict debtors’ access to Bets

THE Lula government must prepare an offensive against online sports betting, known as bets. The initiative, coordinated by the Civil House, has the participation of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Planning and Budget and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

According to Lauro Jardin’s column, in The Globethe expectation is that, by mid-May, a presidential decree will be published with measures aimed at restricting access to platforms and reducing the impact of the sector on the debt of Brazilian families.

Among the proposals under analysis is the veto on the participation, in online betting, of people interested in the debt refinancing program that the federal government intends to launch. The measure seeks to prevent citizens in delicate financial situations from using renegotiated resources to continue betting.

Another front of the offensive involves actions to combat manipulation in betting house advertisements, especially those that encourage compulsive behavior. The government is also considering restricting the targeting of campaigns and promotional offers aimed at players considered more vulnerable to addiction.

Internally, Palácio do Planalto’s orientation is to “close the taps” which, in the government’s assessment, would be facilitating and stimulating the growth of online betting in the country. Members of the Executive consider that the advancement of the sector contributed to the increase in debt among Brazilian families.

According to this assessment, the growth in debt would have an impact on the population’s economic perception and would be related to the difficulties faced by the government in recovering higher levels of approval.

The decree, if published, should integrate a broader set of measures that have been discussed by the federal government to reinforce control over the betting sector and expand consumer protection actions.
